DVT recognition, prevention and pulmonary embolism warning signs — NCLEX-RN learning guide
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs. Risk is multifactorial and can involve immobility, hospitalization, surgery, active cancer, pregnancy and other factors. Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially fatal complication.
മലയാളത്തിൽ പഠിക്കേണ്ടത് | Malayalam lesson summary
Video learning recap (caption-informed, not verbatim)
- 00:01–00:53: Leg clot formation and possible risk factors
- 00:53–01:24: Early safe mobilization and preventive strategies
- 01:24–01:54: Compression measures and management concepts
NCLEX-RN clinical reasoning: key takeaways
- Assess patient-specific VTE risk and follow prescribed prophylaxis, including mobilization and indicated medications/devices.
- Suspected DVT needs professional assessment; do not massage the affected leg.
- Most DVT treatment relies on anticoagulation when indicated; anticoagulants primarily prevent clot extension/new clots rather than directly dissolving them.
NCLEX-RN 2026–2029 study companion: DVT: recognize potential pulmonary embolism
New educational explanation: DVT may present with unilateral leg swelling, pain and warmth, but it may also be asymptomatic. Confirmatory evaluation is clinical and commonly uses duplex ultrasound. New dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, syncope or circulatory collapse may signal pulmonary embolism. Anticoagulation decisions and prophylaxis follow prescribed protocols.
മലയാളത്തിൽ പ്രധാന ആശയം: DVT സംശയിക്കുമ്പോൾ affected leg massage ചെയ്യരുത്. Sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ PE emergency ആയി rapid response / urgent medical evaluation നടത്തണം.
Original NCLEX-style clinical judgment practice
Question: A hospitalized client with a swollen painful calf suddenly develops sharp chest pain and difficulty breathing. What is the nurse’s priority?
- Massage the calf to relieve the pain
- Encourage an unsupervised walk to disperse the clot
- Wait for the next scheduled ward round
- Activate emergency assessment, evaluate ABCs and follow rapid-response protocols
Correct answer: D. Rationale / വിശദീകരണം: D addresses possible pulmonary embolism and compromised oxygenation. A and B risk harm; C delays life-saving assessment. Oxygen and other interventions are guided by patient findings and facility protocols.
Malayalam–English quick terminology
- DVT — deep vein thrombosis
- PE — pulmonary embolism
- Duplex ultrasound — imaging for suspected venous clot
Two learning questions
Does every DVT have obvious leg pain? No. Some clots cause few or no symptoms.
Do anticoagulants immediately dissolve a clot? They mainly prevent extension or new clot formation while the body clears existing thrombus.
