NCLEX-RN MCQ and OSCE: Understand the Difference
Candidates assigned to Stream B generally complete an Outcomes-Based Assessment consisting of an MCQ stage followed by a clinical examination stage.
NCLEX-RN MCQ examination
The NCLEX-RN is a computerised adaptive examination that assesses nursing knowledge, clinical judgment, client safety and entry-level nursing decision-making.
Objective Structured Clinical Examination
The OSCE is a separate practical clinical examination. It assesses whether a candidate demonstrates the knowledge, skills and competence expected from a graduate-level nurse educated through an Australian NMBA-approved programme.
Stream B candidates who have completed Orientation Part 1, the Portfolio and the MCQ examination must pass the OSCE before becoming eligible to apply for registration.

Current 2026 NCLEX-RN Examination Format
The current NCLEX-RN Test Plan applies from 1 April 2026 through 31 March 2029. The examination uses Computerized Adaptive Testing, meaning the computer selects questions according to the candidate’s estimated ability while meeting the required test-plan distribution.

The five-hour limit includes all breaks. The number of questions received does not indicate by itself whether the candidate passed or failed.
What Does the NCLEX-RN Assess?
